Frequently asked questions

Can I file Copy A from this PDF?

No. The IRS only accepts paper Copy A on the official red scannable form, so a printout of the PDF can’t be mailed in. File Copy A electronically through the IRS IRIS portal (free) or on an official paper form, and use these filled copies for the contractor, your state and your records.

When is the 1099-NEC due?

January 31 of the year after you paid the contractor, both for the copy sent to the contractor and for filing with the IRS.

What information do I need?

Your name, address and TIN, the contractor’s name, address and TIN (from the W-9 they gave you), the total nonemployee compensation in box 1, and any federal or state tax withheld.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. ModifyPDF processes files with JavaScript inside your browser. Your documents never leave your device, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

Every copy, filled at once

The 1099-NEC PDF contains several copies of the form: Copy A for the IRS, Copy 1 for your state, Copy B for the contractor and Copy 2 for the contractor’s state return. Type into Copy 1 and your answers are written into Copy B and Copy 2 as well. Copy A is locked by the IRS.

Filing Copy A

The IRS can’t process a printed Copy A from a PDF. File it electronically through the free IRS IRIS portal, or on the official red form ordered from the IRS. The other copies from this PDF are fine to print and send.
