Frequently asked questions

Who do I send my W-9 to?

To the business or person who asked for it. The W-9 is not filed with the IRS; the requester keeps it and uses your details to report what they paid you, for example on a 1099-NEC.

Is it safe to type my SSN here?

The form is filled inside your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored by ModifyPDF. Only send the finished W-9 to someone you trust, ideally through a secure channel rather than plain email.

Should I use my SSN or an EIN?

Individuals and single-member LLCs that are disregarded entities usually use their SSN (or the owner’s EIN if they have one). Corporations, partnerships and multi-member LLCs use their EIN. The IRS instructions on the form explain each case.

Do I need to sign the W-9?

Yes, Part II must be signed and dated. Download the filled form and use Sign PDF to add your signature and the date.
